PieterはITマネージメントとソフトウェアエンジニアリングに特化したキャリアを20年以上積んでいる。Japan Consumer bankのIT部門の主任としてCitibank、そして新生銀行でIT責任者を務め、新生銀行での技術テクニックを共同出筆者として書籍を出版した。現在はマネックス・セキュリティーズのCTO兼IT責任者として、新たな技術的展開を進めている。その一方、日本国内の環境や放射線レベルを量るボランティアグループSafecast Japanを立ち上げ、ディレクターを務める。震災後、提供されている定量的・定性的なデータのみでは満足せず、独立したグループとして放射線を専門に計測をし、データへのアクセスを一般に公開した。iPhoneとドックし、放射能を測定することのできるiGeigieを発明し Ars Electronica Grand Prixを受賞した。どのようにオープンハードウェアやオープンソフトウェア、そしてソーシャルネットワークを活用していくのか、そして国民が科学的、社会的な勢力になるためのたくさんのインスピレーションとなっている。慶応義塾大学では准上級研究員としてセンサーネットワークを専門に研究し、「ScanningTheEarth」プロジェクトの一員として関わっている。限られた自由時間では、写真家の一面を持ち、Tokyo Hacker Spaceでハードウェアハッキング、サイクリングやダイビングなどの趣味を持つ。

Profile

Pieter Franken’s career spans well over 20 years specializing in IT management and software engineering. He has worked as IT Head of retail bank at Citibank Japan and was responsible for the IT transformation at Shinsei Bank in Japan. He co-authored a book about the engineering and management techniques used to dramatically transform Shinsei Bank into a retail banking power house. Currently Pieter is spearheading new technology deployment at Monex Securities as their Chief Technology Officer and Head of Group IT. Monex is one of the leading retail brokerages in Japan with focus to build a global IT platform to fulfill Monex’ Global Vision to become a global player in retail brokerage. Not happy with the quantity and quality of the data available shortly after the Fukushima Nuclear crisis in March 2011, Pieter together with Joiichi Ito (Director MIT Media Lab), Sean Bonner, and other volunteers founded Safecast, an independent volunteer group focused on transparent measurement of radiation levels, and open access to the results. Pieter invented the iGeigie, a radiation sensor that docks with the iPhone to create a versatile Geiger counter. The Safecast project recently won Honorary Mention at the Ars Electronica Grand Prix 2012. At Keio University Pieter is a Senior Visiting Researcher undertaking scientific research on open sensor networks as a member of Prof Jun Murai’s WIDE/ScanningTheEarth project. In his limited free-time, he is busy with photography, hacking hardware as a Tokyo Hacker Space member, cycling and scuba diving.
